🌟 Celebrating Robin Sweeney: Partner of the Year for Exceptional Student Services! 🌟
We are thrilled to announce that Robin Sweeney, our dedicated high school counselor, has been honored as the Partner of the Year for Exceptional Student Services! 🎉 This prestigious recognition, awarded by the federal TRIO program LEARN, celebrates individuals who have made outstanding contributions to supporting and enhancing student services.
Robin is starting her 20th year with PISD, having served as a 7th-grade counselor at Coronado Junior High for 8 years and now in her 12th year at PHS. With 38 years in education, including 9 years as a language arts teacher, Robin brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role. She holds both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northwestern Oklahoma State University.
Outside of work, Robin enjoys spending time with her family. She has been married to Dr. Kevin Sweeney, a professor at WBU, for 33 years. They have two children, Duncan and Morgan, both PHS graduates, and two grandchildren, Memphis and Sawyer.
Robin’s passion lies in building relationships and supporting students and families. Whether guiding students through college applications, helping them pursue scholarships, or offering support for personal issues, she is dedicated to making a positive impact. Her strong rapport with students is one of her greatest strengths. She shared, "The PHS counselors ordered new shirts that say, 'Your life is worth my time.' I feel that is my mantra in school and in life."
The "Partners of the Year" award celebrates those who go above and beyond in their commitment to student success, demonstrating exceptional dedication and service in educational settings. We are incredibly proud of Robin for this well-deserved recognition and celebrate the exceptional work of the entire PHS counseling team. Congratulations, Robin! 🎓💖

Yesterday our Plainview Bulldog Coaches united for an inspiration kickoff meeting and message. 💪🏽🏅
Tim Siegel, executive director of the Team Luke Hope for Minds Foundation, addressed the Plainview ISD coaching staff to remind them of the impact they have on the lives of the students they coach. Siegel shared the story of his son, Luke, who suffered a traumatic brain injury, and the lessons he learned from being Luke’s caretaker after the injury. In his closing remarks, Siegel recounted a comment someone made to him: “Luke made an impact without ever saying a word.” His message reminded the coaches that simple acts and words of encouragement can have a profound effect on others, and he urged them to be intentional in their actions.
The coaches’ meeting began with a brief message from Athletic Director Adrian Alfaro. Alfaro emphasized the importance of togetherness for this school year, stating that each sport is strengthened by the support of all other sports and that each coach benefits from the support of their colleagues. Plainview ISD Superintendent, Dr. H.T. Sanchez, followed Coach Alfaro’s message with an acknowledgment and appreciation for the work the coaches have done for the youth of Plainview. “I’ve seen kids on sports fields this summer. The gyms have been open. On the fields, in the camps, they get to learn from you, and you have an impact on the community,” Sanchez said. He reminded the coaches that, for many of the athletes, they serve as parental figures. Through athletics, the students receive guidance, accountability, and someone willing to teach them about sports and life. Dr. Sanchez concluded his message by encouraging the coaches to pay forward the positive influences they received from their own coaches to the next generation.
Coach Siegel then shared part of his personal story, highlighting "Seven Inspirations from Luke," a list of lessons he learned through his experience with his son. The first inspiration is "Find Your Passion," which Siegel explained is not just about having a passion for one's sport, but also for the school, athletes, and fellow coaches. The next is "Don’t Ever Quit," a message Siegel illustrated with an anecdote about a stranger who encouraged him during a difficult time by saying, “I’m praying for you. One foot in front of the other,” before walking away. Siegel encouraged the coaches to "Lean on Friends and Family," stressing the importance of asking others how they are doing, especially when they seem down, and of seeking help when needed instead of bottling up emotions.
He continued through the list of inspirations without elaborating on all of them. The list also includes "Be Careful/Make Good Choices," "Have Faith," "Find Forgiveness," and "Legacy (Let a loved one’s legacy live on through you)." Coach Siegel concluded his talk by distributing "Fight Like Luke" wristbands to the coaches and gathering them for a group photo. Coach Siegel has also authored two books based on his experiences following Luke’s accident, titled "It’s In God’s Hands" and "Fight Like Luke." Several coaches received a copy of "Fight Like Luke" during the meeting.

Beyond Plainview Sports
Plainview Bulldog Aby Pavlicek spent part of her summer representing the USA by playing soccer in Spain. While in Spain, Aby and her team played several scrimmages and played three competitive games against teams from Barcelona, Valencia and Tarragona, finishing with a win, a loss and a tie in the three matches. In the final game of the series this past week, Aby scored the lone goal for the team from USA, but the team ultimately lost 4-1.
According to Aby’s mom, Nora Pavlicek, while in Spain Aby attended the Beyond Sports leadership training that was led by Maddy Ireton (assistant women’s soccer coach at Kenyon College) and Megan Jensen (assistant women’s soccer coach at Washington University). In addition to the training and games, the team enjoyed several tours and visited the cities of Barcelona, Valencia and Tarragona. Aby’s parents have been in Spain with Aby during her trip to Spain. Parents of the team enjoyed their own set of tours while the team practiced and attended the various camps and programs. Nora says that they “are so thankful for this great opportunity and lifetime experience for Aby.”
Beyond Sports is a collection of former college athletes, educators, coaches and international adventurers who are passionate about connecting the world through sports. Established in 2010, Beyond Sports provides opportunities for players from the United States to travel to places like Spain, Italy, Costa Rica, Panama, South Africa and Australia. They strive to provide a mutually beneficial experience for both the teams from the United States and for the teams in the host country by providing competitive opportunities on the field while also providing leadership and academic opportunities focused on service and global engagement. For information on Beyond Sports, follow the link - Beyond Sports (beyondsportstours.com).
During the 2023-24 soccer season, Coach Richardson nominated three of the Lady Bulldog players to play soccer this summer through the Beyond Sports program. Aby Pavlicek applied to the program and was selected, along with nineteen others, to be a part of the USA team. Aby is the only player from the state of Texas. Even though Coach Richardson is no longer in Plainview, Aby continues to keep her updated during her trip. “We can’t thank [Coach Richardson] enough for believing in Aby,” says her mom.
Once Aby is back and has a chance to reflect on her experience in Spain, we will have a follow-up article and share more of her story.
